Regular servicing of your Mercedes Benz will maintain the top performance you expect from your car. One of the best things you can do for it is find a servicing shop that is knowledgeable and experienced with your make and model.
Fuel injector issues are a common problem that occurs with some models. Nothing replaces regular servicing, but you can educate yourself on signs to look out for in case something goes wrong in between appointments.
What is a fuel injector?
Your car’s fuel injector is part of a system of parts under the hood that work together to make sure that your engine gets the right mixture of air and fuel. Your fuel pump will deliver gas to the fuel injector, which sprays it at a specific angle into the intake manifold. The air and gas mix and are then compressed in the combustion chamber. This combustion creates the energy that powers your car.
Simply put, your fuel injector is a very important part of the process that takes gas from your tank to make your engine run. It is an integral part of your car that you need to maintain to keep your car’s engine healthy. If your injector is not cleaned regularly, then you can run into many issues.
Signs of Fuel Injector Problems
You won’t have to spend any time under the hood to recognize some common signs of fuel injector failure. If you notice any of the below signs of a problem, bring your car in to be serviced as soon as you notice something is wrong.
- Rough Idling: Most cars are not completely still while idling, but if you notice that your Mercedes is making a sputtering noise and shaking while stopped, then you might have a fuel injector issue. You might also notice that your engine is stalling. A certified mechanic will be able to inspect your Mercedes and utilize diagnostic equipment to detect a fuel injector problem by measuring the revolutions per minute. This is an issue that will be very obvious to a driver as well. Even if your fuel injectors are not the cause of your rough idling, it’s usually an obvious indication that something is wrong and a professional should take a look under the hood.
- Engine Misfires: Your fuel injectors are part of the system that starts and powers your engine, so if there is an issue with them, then you may notice that your engine misfires when you try to turn it on. You will notice the sputtering sounds and should immediately bring your car in for a service.
- Your Engine Won’t Start: If your engine’s cylinders aren’t getting the right amount of gas and air from your fuel injector, the combustion that needs to happen in order to get the show on the road won’t and your engine won’t start. This is pretty rare but if you don’t catch any of the earlier signs of injector failure then it is more likely.
- Lower MPG: If your injector is not working properly, you might notice more frequent fill ups. Bad fuel economy is a sure way to spend more than necessary. It is also a pretty good sign of some type of engine part failure, including bad injectors.
Common Causes of Bad Fuel Injectors
Your fuel injectors have gasoline flowing through them and are directly involved in the combustion process. The combination of heat and gas can cause buildup. Gasoline usually has detergents added in to prevent fuel injector failure due to greasy debris. Cheaper gas has less detergents, causing your injectors to get dirty much quicker and requiring more frequent service.
